Signs My Import’s Power Steering Pump Is Going Bad

The power steering pump in your car, truck, or utility vehicle circulates the power steering fluid through the hydraulic system to make steering your import much easier. If you plan to keep your import for a long time, Car Doctors Auto Repair advises that there may come a time when the power steering pump will go bad. This is an auto part that can be replaced, so don’t worry. We are going to list the signs of a bad power steering pump below so you know what to look for. Bring your vehicle to our shop at the first sign of trouble.

Leaking Fluid

Power steering fluid is red. Consequently, if you see red spots or puddles on your garage floor, your power steering pump is leaking. Generally, the pump cannot be repaired, even if the leak is a minor one. Rather, you will have to replace your import’s power steering pump to prevent the power steering fluid loss. Without power steering fluid, your hydraulic power steering system will make it extremely difficult for you to steer and control your automobile.

Strange Sounds

Another sign that the power steering pump is going out is strange sounds. For example, if you hear whining or squealing, it could be either the power steering pump or the accessory belt to which it is attached. Both of these sounds will get louder the tighter you turn your steering wheel.

A more common sound is groaning. Basically, the power steering pump will groan every time you turn the steering wheel. Again, the tighter you turn the wheel the louder the sound. It’s important to have any strange sounds coming from your automobile checked as soon as possible to make sure that the noise is not causing additional damage.

Stiff Steering Wheel

You may also notice changes in how your steering wheel feels. Generally, if the power steering pump is going bad, the wheel will feel stiffer. It will be more difficult to turn the steering wheel. This being said, the steering wheel might also feel too loose or switch between being too tight and too loose.

Unresponsive Steering

Finally, if your steering becomes unresponsive, it’s probable that the power steering pump has died. This can make controlling your automobile almost impossible, and you may find yourself stuck on the road unable to turn.

Car Doctors Auto Repair in Athens, GA, is here to help, so call us today at the first sign of power steering trouble. We will inspect the system and replace the pump if necessary.
