Signs My Import’s Transmission Is Going Bad

Whether automatic or manual, you need your import’s transmission functioning properly in order to drive the automobile. Car Doctors Auto Repair can service and repair your transmission if it needs it. Here are signs that your import’s transmission is going bad and needs immediate TLC.

Burning Transmission Smells

If you smell burning odors coming from the transmission, you may have little to no transmission fluid left in the system. Lack of protective fluid can cause the transmission to overheat. The hotter the transmission gets the higher the risk of additional damage.

Leaking Transmission Fluid

One thing that will reduce the level of the transmission fluid is a fluid leak. Transmission fluid can leak out of the transmission hoses, the pan gasket, the pan, and even the torque converter. Your transmission could be leaking if have red spots on the garage floor.

Noises From the Transmission

A dying transmission may also make strange sounds when it is in neutral or while shifting the gears. A humming noise when the transmission is in neutral means the transmission needs to be looked at right away. The transmission may also grind the gears as it shifts them or “clunk” into gear. You shouldn’t hear any of these noises, nor should you hear squealing.

Problems With the Gear Shifts

The noises may be the least of your problems if the transmission is having issues shifting through the gear cycle. A bad transmission may also slip out of gear, causing the engine to rev and you to lose power. The faulty transmission may hesitate to go into gear, as well.

Strange Vibrations or Shaking

Your automobile should not vibrate or shake when the transmission is doing its job. Strange vibration or shaking could be a sign that the transmission fluid is too low or the gears are wearing down. Rough gear shifts are a sign of a transmission in need of service.

Unresponsive Transmission

Ignoring the above signs of transmission problems can leave you with an unresponsive transmission that will not go into gear. Even if you do get the transmission into gear, it may refuse to shift out of first gear and into the rest of the gears in the cycle.

Check Engine Warning Light

Finally, your vehicle’s main computer chip, the engine control module, may opt to turn on the check engine light if the transmission is struggling. This light represents numerous automobile problems including problems with the transmission.
