Signs My SUV’s Alternator Is Going Bad

If you drive an older SUV, there will come a point when the alternator needs to be changed. Generally, this point is at about 100,000 miles. Most people put 100,000 miles on their SUVs in about 10 years. We are going to list below the signs that your alternator is going bad.

Light Problems

One of the first things you might notice is problems with the SUV’s lights. For example, the lights may be shining dimmer or brighter than they normally do. This is a sign that the alternator is producing too little or too much electricity, respectively. The lights may also flicker.

Dead Battery

Another problem that occurs when the alternator dies is a dead battery. This is because the alternator is no longer capable of charging the battery in your SUV. Consequently, even if you jump-start the battery, it will not retain a charge because the alternator is not charging it.

Slow Accessories

You will also notice your power accessories slow down or malfunction. For example, it may take longer for your power seats to adjust or your radio may turn off by itself. Other accessories that will experience problems include the navigation system and USB charging ports.

Frequent Stalling

The alternator also produces power for the spark plugs. This gives them the juice they need to generate sparks. If your SUV has started stalling frequently, it’s possible that the alternator is not providing the spark plugs with the power they need to generate sparks.

Growling Noises

The alternator can start to growl in your engine if it is going bad. This is a sign that the alternator is wearing out while it is trying to produce electricity. The alternator belt may squeal if it is having problems. Bring your SUV to our shop if you hear these noises.

Burning Wires

It is also important to bring your SUV to our shop if you smell burning wires in the engine. This is an indication that the alternator is overworking itself and producing too much electricity. Consequently, you could end up with an electrical fire underneath the hood.

Warning Light

Finally, the battery light will turn on in the SUV if the alternator is going bad. You may also have an ALT light that will illuminate. These lights mean that there is a problem with the electrical system. In this case, the problem is a malfunctioning alternator.
