Let’s talk more about strange engine noises below and their common causes.

Grinding

A grinding or metallic noise such as scraping is usually caused by a clogged oil filter. This noise means that you do not have enough oil circulating through the engine. A faulty water pump or malfunctioning alternator may also make grinding noises in the engine.

Knocking

If you have a problem with the detonation in the cylinders, the engine may knock. The engine will also knock if the rod bearings have worn out. These bearings are located in the cylinder block and they push the rods up and down inside the cylinders. If the bearings are shaking, the pistons that are attached to the rods will make contact with the cylinder walls.

Popping

If you have an exhaust system problem, your engine will pop. It may also tap. Either noise can be made by an exhaust manifold that is leaking. The noises will also be made by a leaking exhaust manifold gasket. Finally, this noise is also caused by a clogged catalytic converter.

Roaring

Speaking of the catalytic converter, there is a problem with people stealing catalytic converters from underneath automobiles. When this happens, the engine will roar loudly when you first fire it up. It will continue to be loud until you replace the catalytic converter. The same is true with the muffler if it has a hole in it.

Sizzling

Automotive fluids will sizzle if they leak onto hot auto parts. If the leak is a minor one, the fluid may make a hissing noise. Another thing that will make a hissing noise in the engine is a leaking vacuum hose. Do not worry. We can fix both problems.

Squealing

Finally, the power steering pump will squeal when you turn the steering wheel if it is going bad. Loose belts can also squeal. One belt in particular is the accessory belt. It will squeal when you first start your engine and may continue to squeal while you are driving your vehicle.
