What Are The Things That Turn On the Check Engine Light?

A study in 2019 showed that the check engine light reveals problems in the engine that may otherwise go unnoticed. As such, it is important that you pay attention to the check engine warning. Many things can go wrong that will result in the illumination of your engine light. Car Doctors Auto Repair lists the common reasons why a check engine light turns on below.

Clogged or Malfunctioning Catalytic Converter

The catalytic converter is responsible for handling the engine’s carbon monoxide. It converts it into carbon dioxide before it is released through the exhaust. A clogged or malfunctioning catalytic converter will be unable to convert the carbon monoxide and you’ll end up with a check engine light warning.

Electrical System or ECU Problems

The electrical system includes the alternator, battery, and the engine control unit (ECU), which is your automobile’s main computer. There are other parts in the electrical system as well. If there is a problem in the electrical system, the ECU will either turn on the check engine light or the battery-shaped light.

Fuel System Leaks or Loose Gas Cap

If your fuel system is leaking, you may end up with too much fuel in the combustion chamber. This increases the carbons found in your vehicle’s emissions and turns on the check engine light. Your engine light will also turn on if your gas cap is loose and the fuel is evaporating out of the tank.

Malfunctioning MAF or O2 Sensor

The mass airflow (MAF) and oxygen (O2) sensors will definitely trigger a check engine light warning if either of them is malfunctioning. The MAF sensor is responsible for tracking the air that flows into the engine. The O2 sensor is responsible for tracking the oxygen released through the tailpipes.

Misfiring Spark Plugs or ECU Problems

The ECU tells the spark plugs when to fire. If it is having problems, it may cause the spark plugs to misfire. Aside from a check engine warning, your engine may also knock. Old and worn spark plugs or spark plug wires will also make the plugs misfire.

Transmission Problems

Finally, transmission problems can also generate a check engine light dashboard warning. You may also notice that your vehicle is having difficulties shifting gears or staying in gear. If you can’t get your vehicle into gear at all, you have a serious transmission problem.
