Car Doctors Auto Repair can help if you blow the head gasket in your BMW. Generally, heat is the reason behind a blown head gasket. If the BMW has been overheating yet you have continued to drive it, you run the risk of not only blowing the head gasket but also cracking the engine block and exhaust manifold. We are going to list the signs of a cracked head gasket below.
You’ll Lose Engine Coolant
One of the first things that will happen is you will lose coolant out of the engine because it will leak through the crack in the head gasket into the combustion chamber. One of the functions of the head gasket is to form a seal above the combustion chamber to prevent coolant and motor oil from making their way into the cylinders. Unfortunately, this will reduce the coolant level in the engine.
The Engine Will Overheat
As such, your BMW’s engine will start to overheat if it wasn’t overheating already. The engine will continue to overheat until you replace the head gasket because the coolant will continue to leak into the combustion chamber. There is no way to stop this coolant hemorrhaging. The head gasket needs to be replaced in order to resolve the problem and keep coolant in the engine.
The Coolant Might Boil
In fact, the engine may get so hot that it starts to boil the coolant. You can hear the bubbling coming from the engine when this happens. To avoid additional and expensive engine damage, pull the BMW over and cut the engine. Do not pop the hood or unscrew the radiator cap until the engine has cooled. Do not drive the BMW, either. Have it towed to our shop.
You’ll See White Exhaust
You may also see white exhaust flowing out of the tailpipe as the combustion chamber burns away the leaking coolant. Coolant creates white exhaust smoke. As an aside, the BMW will release blue exhaust if it is burning motor oil and black exhaust if it is burning fuel.
The Oil Will Turn Milky
Finally, the motor oil in the BMW’s engine is going to turn milky because the coolant will dilute it. This is another reason why you should avoid driving the Beemer when the head gasket is blown. This diluted motor oil can damage the engine beyond repair.
